A Store Manager at Dollar General is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the store, ensuring a positive customer experience, driving sales, managing staff, and maintaining store standards. This role requires strong leadership, organizational skills, and a focus on achieving business goals. You are responsible for the management of all employees in the effective planning and implementation of all store processes, including ordering, receiving, stocking, presentation, selling, staffing and support.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the store, including opening and closing procedures.
- Hire, select, and retain qualified employees in compliance with federal and state labor laws and company policies, ensuring the store is adequately staffed.
- Provide employees with proper training, conduct performance reviews, and address performance gaps with appropriate solutions, including counseling or termination if necessary. Make recommendations on employee pay rates and advancement opportunities.
- Regularly communicate performance, conduct, and safety expectations, and organize meetings and events to promote safety, security, and adherence to company policies.
- Ensure proper staffing and effective store opening and closing each day, personally opening the store at least twice a week and closing it at least twice a week.
- Analyze operating statements to identify business trends, such as sales, profitability, and inventory turnover, while identifying opportunities for expense control, potential shrinkage, and error reduction.
- Manage ordering to meet or exceed in-stock targets, reviewing ordering plans, seasonal trends, and inventory management on a weekly basis, and following up on Basic Stock Replenishment (BSR) and cycle counts.
- Facilitate efficient staging, stocking, and storage of merchandise according to defined company processes.
- Ensure all merchandise is displayed according to company standards, using fixtures properly, including for product presentation, pricing, and signage. Maintain accurate inventory levels by controlling damages, markdowns, scanning accuracy, paperwork, and facility controls.
- Ensure the store's financial integrity through strict cashier accountability, key control, and adherence to company security practices and cash control procedures.
- Develop and implement strategies to increase sales and profitability.
- Provide excellent customer service leadership and maintain a clean, well-organized store. Promote a safe and secure working and shopping environment.
- Ensure high levels of customer satisfaction by providing excellent service and addressing customer inquiries or issues promptly.
- Train staff to deliver exceptional customer service.
- Ensure the store is equipped with the necessary tools to complete required tasks.
- Adhere to and enforce company policies and procedures as outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures manual, Employee Handbook, and company communications.
- Complete all required paperwork and documentation accurately and within specified deadlines.
- Ensure the store is clean, well-organized, and fully stocked.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; a college degree in business or a related field is preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience in retail management is required, with experience in a leadership role being highly preferred.
- Skills: Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills; proficiency in basic computer applications, including POS systems.
- Attributes: Ability to multitask, work under pressure, and adapt to a fast-paced retail environment.
Work Environment:
- Setting: Primarily in-store, with some time spent in the office for administrative tasks.
- Schedule: Full-time position, typically requiring availability on evenings, weekends, and holidays based on store needs.

Physical Requirements:
- Frequent walking and standing.
- Frequent bending, stooping and kneeling to run check out station, stock merchandise and unload trucks.
- Frequent handling of merchandise and equipment such as hand-held scanner, pricing guns, box cutters, merchandise containers, two-wheel dollies, and U-boats (six-wheel carts).
- Frequent and proper lifting of up to 40 pounds; occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds.
- Occasional climbing (using ladder).
- Regularly driving/providing own transportation to make bank deposits and occasionally to attend management meetings and to other Dollar General stores.
- Fast-paced environment; moderate noise level.
- Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
